Why Whiteboard Videos Don’t Work.
"It's time to leave our favorite classroom learning tool in the dust."
Alright everyone, pay attention! Today we will be discussing: *writing in scribbly, barely legible, half dried-out marker* "Why Whiteboard Videos Don't Work Very Well".
Can everyone in the back of the room read this okay? Ugh, this feels like were back in school, doesn't it?
It's not that ALL whiteboard videos don't work. Many topics are not right for whiteboard videos
The type of video you choose to deliver your information is very critical for effectiveness and efficiency.
And the truth of the matter is that most ideas are not complex enough for whiteboard videos. You never want to consciously, or subconsciously, make something more complicated than it needs to be.
If a simple, conversational topic is used in a whiteboard video, the frame will be cluttered with unnecessary drawings, objects, and arrows.
Getting a high quality whiteboard video is technical and expensive
A whiteboard video, like any video, requires prep.
However, a whiteboard video also requires rehearsal and a skilled visual artist who can draw quickly and attractively. To an untrained person, whiteboard videos can be a fun and easy way to present information.
However, the work that goes into the planning and production of a seriously good one, is not for the faint of heart.
Motion graphics videos
Motion graphics videos involve a similar level of creativity but can be more easily designed and lack the rehearsal required for whiteboard videos. They are dynamic and more polished.
As a result, you have an easier time presenting and altering information.
Motion graphics videos also allow for the quality of production to be controlled using straight lines and computer generated colors as opposed to free hand sketching.
Human-centered videos
Many times, a topic can be easily presented by one or several people.
When a visual is necessary, it's easier to cut away to a computer generated graphic, have a computer or screen in frame along with the person that can easily cycle through images, or even print images and present them seamlessly in the video.
Humans like to see other humans.
A human being is far more interesting than a flat, white, board. Furthermore, computer graphics tend to be richer in color and more easily identifiable than free hand sketches. They can also be quickly deleted, modified, or expanded upon.
A human-centered video is not only more engaging, it also allows for greater freedom.
A video that centers on one person can transition to a shot of multiple people, a computer or TV screen, a graphic, animation, or even a whiteboard! But a video that aims to use a whiteboard as the primary tool to explain a topic is limited to this one tool.
